On her hit show Homeland — whose season three series finale airs Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO — Claire Danes tends to wear staid suits (and the occasional hospital gown). But on the red carpet, the three-time Emmy winner and four-time Golden Globe winner is a style pro. She’s been walking in the pop of flash bulbs for almost two decades now, ever since 1995’s My So-Called Life made her a bold-faced name. While most people would be intimidated navigating the tricky style waters, Danes approaches her red carpet appearances with a solid confidence, telling us in 2004, “Armed with good shoes and a good frock, I’m good to go!” She takes a minimalist approach to her style, donning sleek silhouettes with clean necklines and letting a pop of bold color or dazzling fabric bring the glamour.

Happy 24th birthday to Taylor Swift. Our favorite pop princess has had a huge year: Swift was the biggest winner at this year’s Country Music Awards, appeared as our gorgeous November InStyle cover girl, and was named Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards.
So what kind of birthday present do you get for one of the biggest stars of music today? We’d advise against any diva-worthy splendor for something much more charming. Swift told us that some of her favorite things include: “Starbucks’ Iced Caramel Lattes, M&M McFlurries and black eyeliner—without them I would be powerless!”
Happy birthday, T. Swift. We’re celebrating by taking a look back at her transformation from girl-next-door to girl-selling-out-stadiums.

Happy birthday, Hailee Steinfeld! Today, the teen queen turns 17. She’s already been nominated for an Oscar, took on the iconic Shakespeare role of Juliet, and is one of our favorite style muses (who else can make silver nails and hot pink Converse glam enough for the red carpet?). We can’t wait to see what she takes on next!
How will the busy birthday girl celebrate? Most likely on set! She’s currently filming Barely Lethal, a comedy about an international teen assassin who longs for a normal life and, after faking her own death, enrolls in a suburban high school. Due out next year, Barely Lethal will co-star Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson.
Celebrate Hailee’s birthday by perusing some of our favorite red carpet looks from the budding style icon.

With the Thanksgiving spirit of gratitude still with us, we rounded up gifts that do more than put a smile on the face of the receiver; they also give back to someone (or something) in need. Each item on our wish list donates proceeds to charities, promotes fair trade relationships, or participates in a “buy one, give one,” philosophy.
From glam lipsticks that benefit HIV/AIDS research to bicycles that provide clean drinking water, and bracelets that plant trees, we have something for everyone on your list (even that hard-to-please aunt). Log on, fill those electronic shopping carts, and become a hero just by clicking, “purchase” this season.

It’s no secret that we love celebs! We double-tap their Instagrams, buy advance tickets to their movies, and cite them as our personal style muses (WWEMW: What Would Eva Mendes Wear?). Our devotion to our favorite stars knows no bounds, and that’s why this holiday season, we’re making their personal causes, our personal causes.
In the December InStyle, we profile seven celebrity-helmed charities that inspire us, including Seth Rogan’s Hilarity for Charity, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for The Alzheimer’s Association. (Hear him talk about his reasons for supporting this particular cause in the video below.) There’s also Alicia Keys‘s Keep a Child Alive, an organization she co-founded to provide treatment, love, and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS, and the Just Keep Livin’ Foundation, created by Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila to encourage at-risk students to educate themselves, improve their physical health, and make positive life decisions.
So if you want to give back this season, but aren’t sure where to start, we suggest letting the stars point the way.

Nicole Richie has already filled our closets with her boho-fabulous House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate lines, but now she’s bringing her innate sense of style to our living rooms.
Richie’s Holidays in Style is a selection of Joss & Main’s furniture and home accents that the pint-sized star personally curated herself. Her picks mirror her fashion choices: clean lines, luxurious fabrics, and Moroccan touches. Each piece is its own little masterpiece, from an elegant side chair rendered in ecru velvet, to chic ikat rugs and witty owl statues.
Holidays in Style arrives just in time for the winter entertaining season. Nicole, an avid hostess, told InStyle, “Our house is the one people come to hang.” Mimic her inviting holiday table with gold charger plates, mercury glass, and splashes of red.
Like any great designer, Nicole’s style is constantly changing. Take a look back at her evolution. Click here to see Nicole’s style transformation!

Though his official title is Creative Ambassador of Barneys, author Simon Doonan is also an instant backstage pass to a stylish world of eccentrics. His latest book, The Asylum, regales with behind-the-curtain stories of the fashion world that are equal parts glamorous and hilarious.
“It’s called The Asylum because I think of fashion as being both a refuge and a nuthouse. There are both meanings in the word asylum,” he told InStyle.com last night at a Time, Inc. event in New York City hosted by InStyle’s editor Ariel Foxman, where he delighted the crowd with his patented brand of cheeky bon mots.
In the four decades that he’s worked as a style insider, Doonan has accumulated a wealth of drool-worthy anecdotes about celebs, designers, and the fashion world at large. “I wanted to write a humor book and write down my most treasured dexterities before they evaporate. And having been in the fashion world for such a long time, I’ve seen this incredible period when it went from being a small world to being an infinite landscape. It’s a global spectator sport now,” he told us.
Reading The Asylum is almost as good as being seated next to Doonan at a chi chi dinner party. His confessionals are absurd and fantastical — from the time he got a wedgy from Tom Ford to the day the ceiling collapsed at a Michael Kors show (Anna Wintour remained calm, dusting bits of plaster out of Suzy Menke’s hair).
Doonan both celebrates and skewers the fashion world. “I see myself as a carny, rather than an artist, presiding over my very own Coney Island sideshow,” he writes. The Asylum is available now.
